The First Two Days

We're a family of 4 now! We're thrilled to welcome Anson Emory Lange.

Anson was born after only about 6 hours of active labor (quick!) and everything was smooth & healthy & safe. He, like his brother Simon 2 1/2 years ago, was born at home in a big tub of water with a midwife, doula and daddy in attendance. He nursed right away, has all the right numbers of body parts, and has dark hair - which makes him look really different to us after Simon's strawberry-blondeness from day 1.

Simon got to go play with friends all day while I was in labor, so he was thrilled. When he came home later in the afternoon he was instantly addicted to Anson. "I need that baby." "We have a new baby now!" "I want to hold that blue baby." etc. etc. etc. He's already smothered Anson with kisses & hugs, and poked all his various body parts in order to identify them to us.

We thought Anson seemed smaller than Simon was at birth, but we learned our lesson when the midwife (Ami) measured & weighed him. Your perspective sure changes when you're used to a 2 1/2 year old like Simon Gerard. Anson was 8 lbs 14 oz (2 oz shy of a 9 pounder! And he was 3 days early. Ami said if I'd carried him to the due date he certainly would have been several ounces over 9lbs!), 21 inches long, head was 14" we think...neither of us can exactly remember. We know it was a full inch bigger than Simon's was. Anyway, he was born at 11:11am on May 17, 2008.

As for the name...Anson we actually got from characters in two different books we'd read over the past year or so, and Emory was a family name from Adam's late Grandpa Jack Emory Lange.

I've attached a few photos for you visual-types, even though sometimes I think all new baby pictures kind of look like each other... :)

All is well, we're very tired, and I feel great. Really, great. I feel significantly better than I did after Simon's birth, for no reason that I can tell other than maybe my body was impacted less since it's done the birth thing before.

Cheers from the Lange four!
